Terms of Use

Short, in plain English, and honest about the parts that cost money.

Last updated

These terms are the agreement between you and SymbioLearn. By making an account you accept them. If you do not, do not use the service.

SymbioLearn is operated by Thabani M. Takwena from South Africa. Write to hi@symbiolearn.com about anything here.

Who can use SymbioLearn

You need to be at least 16, or the minimum age of digital consent in your country if that is higher. One account belongs to one person. Do not share your sign-in details.

You are responsible for knowing your institution's rules about study tools and following them. SymbioLearn does not know what your course allows, and it is not a defence against an academic misconduct finding.

What you put into it

Your material stays yours. Adding a Source does not give us ownership of it.

You do give us the permission we need in order to run the product: to store your files, extract and split their text, send the passages a task needs to the processing services listed in our Privacy Policy, derive concepts, quizzes, flashcards and Lessons from them, and show all of that back to you. That permission is limited to operating SymbioLearn for you and ends when you delete the content or your account.

By adding a Source you confirm you have the right to use it that way. Do not upload material you have no right to, anything unlawful, anything containing another person's private information, or an exam paper or assessment you have been told not to share. We may remove content that breaks this and, if a rights holder asks us to, we will act on a proper complaint.

What SymbioLearn produces

Concepts, quiz questions, flashcards, Lesson explanations and Today's suggestions are generated by a language model from the material you supplied. They can be wrong, incomplete, or out of date, and the model can misread a source.

Every fact SymbioLearn shows you carries the Source it came from. Check it. Treat SymbioLearn as something to study with, not as an authority, and never as medical, legal, financial or professional advice.

Your grades are yours. We do not promise any academic result.

Fair use

Some limits exist to keep the service running for everyone, and they apply on every plan:

  • A PDF can be up to 50 MB and 1000 pages.
  • A YouTube lecture can be up to four hours.
  • Up to 20 imports an hour.

Do not resell access, use SymbioLearn to build a competing dataset, scrape it, run it through automated agents, or try to get around plan limits with extra accounts. We can rate limit or suspend an account that does.

Plans and payment

Free costs nothing: one module, up to five Sources in it at a time, five quizzes a week, flashcards, and 30 Live Voice Lesson minutes in total to try them. No card is needed.

Pro costs $19 a month, or $149 a year, which works out at $12.42 a month and saves $79 against paying monthly. It gives you a module for every course you take, as many Sources in them as each course needs, quizzes whenever you want one, flashcards across every module, and 300 Live Voice Lesson minutes every month.

Payments are handled by Dodo Payments, who are the seller of record. Their terms cover the transaction itself, and taxes are added where your country requires them.

Pro renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. Cancel any time from your account. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not end the period you have already paid for, and Pro keeps working until that period ends. After that the Free limits apply again, and your modules, Sources and learning record stay where they are.

If we change the price, existing subscribers are told by email at least 30 days before it applies to them, and can cancel before it does.

Refunds

If you are unhappy with Pro, write to us within 14 days of your first payment and we will refund it, unless the account has clearly been used at scale in that time. Renewals are not refunded, because you can cancel before one happens. Consumers in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom keep their statutory withdrawal rights, which Dodo Payments administers.

Voice Lesson minutes

Lessons are charged by the minute of connected conversation, measured on our servers rather than in your browser, and rounded up to the nearest minute.

Included minutes reset at the start of each billing period and do not roll over. Minutes you buy as a top-up, 60 for $5 or 180 for $12, never expire and are used only after your included minutes are gone.

When your minutes run out, Lessons stop starting. Nothing is charged for going over, ever. Sources, concepts, quizzes, flashcards and Today keep working. Minutes already spent are not refundable, and top-up minutes are not transferable between accounts.

Availability

We aim to keep SymbioLearn running, but we do not promise it will be available without interruption. We will do maintenance when it is least disruptive where we can.

We may change how features work, and we may retire one. If a change removes something you were paying for, we will tell you before it happens and refund the unused part of your period if you would rather leave.

Ending it

You can delete your account whenever you want, from your account page.

We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts the service or other people at risk, or is used for something unlawful. Except where the law or a serious risk prevents it, we will tell you why and give you a chance to put it right first. If we close your account without cause, we refund the unused part of your period.

Our rights

The SymbioLearn name, the site, the software and the design belong to us. These terms give you the right to use the service, not to copy it.

Liability

SymbioLearn is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we exclude implied warranties, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost study time, or examination results.

Where liability cannot be excluded, ours is capped at whatever you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $50 if you have paid us nothing.

Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow to be limited. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights stand regardless of this section.

Law

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa, and the South African courts have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer somewhere else, this does not remove the protection of the mandatory laws of the country you live in.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms materially, we will email you at least 30 days before the change applies, and you can close your account before it does. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
